We get this question in the showroom almost weekly: "Quartzite and quartz are basically the same thing, right?" They are not, and the name overlap causes more confusion than any other pair of materials we sell. One is quarried rock. The other is manufactured in a factory. Here's how to tell them apart and which one makes sense for your kitchen.
Clearing up the confusion first
Quartzite is a natural stone. It starts as sandstone, and over millions of years, heat and pressure deep in the earth fuse it into a dense, extremely hard rock made almost entirely of the mineral quartz. It's quarried and cut into slabs the same way granite and marble are.
Quartz (sometimes called "engineered quartz" or "quartz surface" to avoid this exact mix-up) is manufactured stone. Fabricators crush natural quartz mineral and bind it with resin under heat and pressure to form slabs. It's roughly 90 percent quartz mineral by volume, which is exactly where the name confusion comes from, but it's a manufactured product, not a rock you'd find in a quarry.
Same root mineral, two completely different materials. Once you know that, the rest of the comparison is straightforward.
Hardness and durability
Quartzite is the hardest natural surface we install, generally rated around 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, compared to granite's roughly 6 to 6.5. Engineered quartz is manufactured to be harder still, since the fabrication process lets manufacturers optimize for scratch and chip resistance in a way nature doesn't.
In daily kitchen use, both materials handle normal wear without issue. You're not going to scratch either one by chopping vegetables without a cutting board, though we still recommend using one, for your knives if nothing else.
Heat tolerance
Quartzite performs excellently here, essentially on par with granite. As a natural stone, it can take direct heat from a hot pan without the scorching risk that quartz carries.
Quartz is the one material in this comparison that needs a trivet. Its resin binder can scorch permanently under sustained direct heat, and that damage doesn't buff out. If heat tolerance at the stove is a priority, that's a point in quartzite's favor.
Sealing and maintenance
This is the other major practical difference. Quartzite is porous, like granite, and needs sealing, typically about once per year for most slabs. Lighter, more porous quartzite colors may need it slightly more often.
Quartz is nonporous and never needs sealing. It's the lowest-maintenance surface we offer in that specific sense.
Look and consistency
Quartzite's look leans toward marble: soft whites, dramatic veining, and sometimes bold greens, blues, or golds running through the stone. Every slab is one of a kind, and part of choosing quartzite is picking the actual slab that will go into your kitchen.
Quartz gives you manufactured consistency. The pattern and color you see in a sample is what you'll get across every piece, which matters if you're matching a large island to surrounding counters or want a uniform, predictable look.

Quartzite pros and cons
The short version: quartzite gives you a genuinely natural, one-of-a-kind slab with excellent heat resistance and serious hardness, but it costs more than either granite or quartz and it still needs annual sealing like any porous natural stone. If budget is the deciding factor, that upfront cost is the real tradeoff to weigh.
Which is right for you
Choose quartzite if you want the look of natural stone at its most dramatic, you cook with hot pans regularly, and you're comfortable with annual sealing and a higher price point.
Choose quartz if predictable maintenance matters more than having a one-of-a-kind slab, you're matching multiple large pieces, or you want to keep the material budget closer to the lower end of the range.
